Doha, September 24, 2024 — In a groundbreaking diplomatic achievement, Qatar has become the first Gulf nation to be admitted to the United States’ Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This historic move, announced by the U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security, allows Qatari citizens to travel to the U.S. for business or tourism without a visa for up to 90 days.
Key Milestone for Bilateral Relations
Starting no later than December 1, 2024, Qataris can enjoy visa-free travel to the U.S. after completing an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). This online process eliminates the need for in-person interviews. In a reciprocal agreement, U.S. citizens can extend their stay in Qatar from 30 to 90 days without a visa.
The announcement is a testament to Qatar’s compliance with the rigorous eligibility criteria required by the VWP, which include low visa refusal rates and enhanced border management practices. U.S. officials have praised Qatar as an “exceptional partner,” reflecting the growing strategic ties between the two countries, particularly in areas such as security and counterterrorism.
Strengthening U.S.-Qatar Partnership
This move marks a significant shift in the diplomatic landscape, as Qatar becomes the 42nd nation and only the second Muslim-majority country—after Brunei—to join the VWP. U.S. officials highlighted Qatar’s contributions in global diplomacy, including its involvement in mediating conflicts in Gaza and playing a pivotal role during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The Visa Waiver Program’s expansion to include Qatar will enhance tourism and business exchanges between the two nations, solidifying their robust relationship amidst the region’s complex geopolitical dynamics.
A Boost for Qatar’s Global Standing
By joining the ranks of longstanding U.S. allies in the VWP, Qatar is reinforcing its position on the global stage. The enhanced travel privileges will likely result in a surge in business and tourism, further aligning the two nations in an era of growing collaboration.
With this milestone, Qatar and the U.S. continue to deepen their partnership, setting the stage for broader cooperation in the years ahead.
